This one is of Asia and the cartouche in the upper left reads Asia vetus Autore N. Sanson. Abbevillæo. Christianiss. Galliar. Regis Geographo. Parisiis Apud N Langlois  via Iacobaea sub signo Victoria. Cum Privilegio Annorum Viginti. I believe the mapmaker is Nicolas d'Abbeville Sanson, a very famous French cartographer who was working in the 1600's. This was probably part of the "Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde." That was the first folio French atlas to be printed in the mid 1600's. Louis XIV, King of France (the SUN KING) at the time appointed Sanson "Géographe ordinaire du Roy" in 1630, a position he maintained for thirty-five years.           The map is unfortunately tattered along the edges and has been mounted on paper of a sililar weight and composition to the original. It looks like a fairly old repair. One thing that I find intriquing is the great flowing hand writing in the upper right...possibly the KING's?? It clearly is signed Louis. My French is not good enough to understand the line before the signature. I have researched the signature and the style is certainly fitting of the great Sun King.         The map is about 23" by 16 1/2". The map will be shipped rolled in a heavy tube.
