Description Up for sale is an original, antique double page map of Sumatra, Indonesia which came from Sebastian Munster's 1614 edition of "Cosmographey; das ist, Beschreibung aller Lander, Herrschafften,und furnemesten Stetten,des gantzen Erbodens [...] biss ins MDCXIV Jahr gemehret.Published in Basel by Sebastian Henricipetri. Date of publication: 1614. Sumatra ein grosse Insel / so von den alten Geographen Taprobana genennet worden. Image size: 36 x 30.4 cms. Double page map of Sumatra with the lower part of the Malayan peninsula. Title above top margin.  Slight staining confined to margins only and not affecting map area. Singapore is here named as 'Cingatole'. Two panels to the right of the engraved area: the upper with descriptive text and the lower depicting an elephant. Both Sumatra and Ceylon have been associated with the mythical island  of Taprobana, the elephant being the 'trade mark' of Ceylon, but the tip of Java at lower edge of map makes it definitely Sumatra. (To add to the confusion other maps of "Taprobana" on ebay show it as being Ceylon or modern day Sri Lanka; be what may, you are buying Sumatra from me!). Uncoloured as published.
