Description
a unique cornerstone of the scientific thought Galilei, Galileo. In Fiorenza, Per Gio:Batista Landini, 1632. 4to (215x155 mm), contemporary stiff vellum, gilt lettered title on leather label at spine, ff (5), pp. 458, ff. (16). Full page woodcut at frontispiece. thirty xylographies of various size with scientific diagrams and tables first edition of one of the most celebrated Galileo’s masterpiece. In this work he compares the two astronomical systems, Copernican and Ptolemaic, openly supporting the first. The book is written in the form of a dialogue between three friends, a radical, a conservative and an agnostic and it displays all the great discoveries in the heavens which the ancients had ignored; it inveighs against the sterility, wilfulness, and ignorance of those who defend their systems; it revels in the simplicity of Copernican thought, and, above all, it teaches that the movement of the earth makes sense in philosophy, that is, in physics. The Dialogo was published in Florence under a formal license from the Inquisition. In 1633, Galileo was convicted of "grave suspicion of heresy" based on the book, which was then placed on the Index Librorum Proibitorum [Index of Forbidden Books], from which it was not removed until 1835 after the theories it discussed had been permitted in print in 1822. A real cornerstone in the history of science, the Dialogo will lead Galileo to a trial for heresy, his sentence and the abjuration. Light traces of use; overall a fine copy provenance: crossed out signature at titlepage. bibliography: Carli and Favoro, p 28; Cinti, 89; Dibner, 8; Horblit, 18c; Norman, 858; PMM, 128 AN INTERNATIONAL BOOKSELLER IS OFFERING A COPY OF THE SAME EDITION FOR $ 119.000 OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE PRICE AND FREE OF SHIPPING CHARGES
