London. Printed By John Field, Publisher to the Parliament, 1653. First Edition. 24mo.Unpaignated. Engraved general title signed W.V. Textual title to New Testament and Psalms. Handsomely bound in C18th crimson morocco, gilt. Marbled endpapers. A.E.G. Slightly rubbed to extremities.Title a little marked, very small closed tear to margin of A2, small marginal loss to final leaf (index) of Psalms, with no loss to text. Signature of 'Mary long 1796' to verso of Title. Otherwise internally very clean and tight but for a handful of marks. An exceedingly well preserved copy of the 'Pearl' Bible, printed during the rule of Cormwell's Commonwealth at the behest of Parliament. Produced in large numbers, few survive in such condition: the small volumes were designed to fit into the pocket of the British souls. Conforming to the Authorised (King James) Version, the Field Bible was printed with a haste unheard of in Bible production and is thus notorious for its wildly varying inaccuracies and misprints. Most of the common errors identified by Lee Wilson have been corrected in this copy, but John III:21 shows the incorrect 'might' for 'may'. Darlow and Moule 638.
