Description
Up for sale is the rare Peutinger map published in Amsterdam by Jan Jansson in 1653. Tabula Itenaria ex Illustri Peutingerorum Bibliotheca Quae Augustae Vindelicorum Beneficio Marci Velseri Septem-viri Augustani in Lucem edita.. This is a Copper-engraved strip map in 8 sections joined together and hand-coloured (later). Each section approx. 18.5x50.5 cm., overall 18.5x404 cm. (7½x159"). Jan Jansson's rendering of the Ortelius publication of the Peutinger Table, appearing in the second edition of Jansson's Atlas of the Ancient world. The so-called Peutinger Table (named for the 16th century German humanist who once owned the only extant example of the 13th century manuscript), represents the imperial roads and posts throughout the Roman Empire about 250 A.D., with some later additions up to around 500 A.D. Essentially a practical route map in strip form, the map provides detailed lines of roads and staging posts with the distances between them marked, though there is no representatikon of direction. Shirley 393. I have scanned and joined the eight sections into four images ( Images 1-4). It starts with eastern England and ends with the mythical "Tabrobana" and India. Images 5-11 are more detailed scans of sections of the Roman Empire (Image 10 is of Cyprus; I had to mention this). Please email me privately at elmonica@cytanet.com.cy , not through ebay as I cannot send attachments, for any high resolution image of the section of your interest. Condition: Some wear at the folds which are re-inforced on verso. A very attractive example of this very rare map; attractively priced.
