Description
Carte de la Barbarie de la Nigritie et de la Guinée 60 x 49 cm copperplate engraving, 64 x 54 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Paris, circa 1707, printed in Amsterdam circa 1734 We are pleased to offer this fascinating original map (Norwich # 317) of northwest Africa compiled by the great French cartographer Guillaume De L'Isle (1675-1726) for his Atlas de Géographie which was published between 1700 and 1712. At a time when very little of the African interior was known to Europeans, De L'Isle boldly filled his map with speculative lakes and rivers and fascinating text notations regarding the people and places depicted herein. A curious mixture of fact, rumour and imagination this example of the map was issued by the Dutch publishers Covens & Mortier in the 1730s after De L'Isle's death. Rightly considered one of the most desirable regional maps of Africa of De L'Isle, this example is in fine condition and will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the environs of Timbuktu, still a place of great mystery unexplored by Europeans at the time the map was compiled. Note enormous fictional lake to the east and warning of cannibals in the Kingdom of "Temian": Note reference to slave trade in the Kingdom of "Gabou": Senegal, west coast: Tripoli, Libyan desert: Greater "Barbary": Condition - Please note carefully: Map is in overall excellent condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with distinct platemark, fine laid paper, original outline hand colour bright and vivid, three minor repaired tears to top margin outside of neatline.
