Although the cartographer is not named it is very likely that the engraver was Robert Benard (fl 1750-85). This is one sheet of a series, showing the eastern coast of Asia, with countries marked from south to north: Cochin Chine, Chine, Coree, Tatarie Chinoise, Tungusi, Tartarie Russe, Kamtchatka, Koriaki and Tschuczki. Among the islands in the Pacific Ocean mapped are:Philippines, Carolines, Hainan, Formose, Lekeyo, Isles du Japon, Isle de Sahalien. At the north east corner the coast of present day Alaska is partially mapped, including Oonalaschka. Much of the mapping of the coast lines reflects a very primitive knowledge, notably in the shapes of Korea and Japan. Compass readings are marked at many points in the ocean. He was born in Montbard. Buffon's major work was the 36-volume Histoire Naturelle (1749-1789). In it, he provided the first naturalistic account of the history of the earth, including a complete description of its mineralogical, botanical, and zoological productions. Using the idea of natural forces from English physicist Sir Isaac Newton, Buffon used only empirical causes to explain natural phenomena. His works became some of the most well known literary achievements from the Age of Enlightenment.
