Description
Make sure to check out our other colonial antiques in our ebay store by clicking the Eagle Antiques store logo above then click the "COLONIAL FURNISHINGS" category in left hand collumn. c.1780-1820 Fireplace Jack-Rack During the 18th century most of the cooking was done in the hearth and pot or kettle hangers were used to warm the nights meals.Usually seen in iron, this sturdilly built cast bronze jack-rack has a back plate measuring 6" x 7" which has four screw holes for mounting on the fireplace mantle. The arm swings back and forth and also has an adjustable hook which slides along the arm which measures 12" long (overall weight is 3 pounds 4 ounces).Beautifully decorated with scroll work and acorn finials, the piece is crudely sand cast and all the parts are held together with either crudely fashioned rivits or hand peened over which is typical construction for this era. To see two other similar style hangers dated c.1780-1820 see pg.232 (#1 & #2) in DOMESTIC METALWORK 1640-1820 by Gentle.Of exceptional quality for the era and extremely rare, this example came out of a Doctor's estate in New York state recently and it would look great in any colonial hearth.
