[The Island of Jamaica] Printed: Paris, 1780 A Scarce map of Jamaica in twelve parishes, rather than the fourteen divisions known today. Manchester for example is not present here, as it was formed in 1814, through the amalgamation of parishes St. Elizabeth, Clarendon and Vere. With many old placenames such as Trelawny Town, Accompongs Town, and Old Nanny Town. Numerous bays along the coast are named; and routes throughout the island are illustrated. Minor thinning to verso of center bottom, unobtrusive to image of Jamaica. , otherwise in Very Good condition with strong impression and contemporary hand coloured outline. This is an original copper plate engraving from a popular French atlas by J. de Laporte titled 'Atlas moderne portatif.' Map text is in French, printed in 1780. Sheet measures approximately 10 inches x 8 inches (25cm x 20cm).
