Publisher: Isaiah Thomas, Worcester, Massachusetts (Sold at Worcester & Boston) Year: 1791 Binding: Original full-leather in two volumes. Raised spines with red title bands and black volume bands. Collation: 2 vols: Vol i, (4) 5-460; Vol ii, (6) 461-635 (3) 637-786 (4) 789-991 992-1012...Evans 23186. Size: 15 11/16" x 9¾" (2 vols.) Covers: Covers present and attached though joints somewhat weakened. Preliminary Pages: Title with blank verso, Directions to the Binder (and list of plate titles) with blank verso, To Christians of Every Denomination (1 leaf) and Dedication to King James with Order of Books on verso. Page Condition, General: Most pages present and foxed but readable, less than a dozen leaves fully missing. However, there are multiple leaves with wrinkles, large tears, and some loss of text. In each of these cases, however, more than 50% of the leaf is still present. Scattered staining and smaller tears throughout. All endpapers present but torn/wrinkled to varying degrees. Missing Pages: Pages 459-462 missing, covering some leaves of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Text ends after page 972, resulting in the loss of most of II Peter and all of Jude and Revelation, as well as any material which may have been following Revelation, through page 1012. Page Condition, Volume 1: Title has some tears at edges and wrinkles. Marginal tear not affecting text on Directions to the Binder, Small tear on To Christians of Every Denomination, Marginal tear on Dedication to King James (not affecting text). Several pages found with notable tears. These include the following: page 255's upper corner present but detached and laid loose; large straight tear across text 281-282; 283-284 heavily torn with some loss of text, 338-339 large tear with text loss; 343-344 torn and stitched; large mostly straight tears with some loss of text on pages 407-414; Also on 447-448; fairly large tears at edges of pages 453-456; large tear with very little to no text loss (though it is over text) on pages 457-458. Scattered staining. Foxed throughout. Other tears, but these were notable as I leafed through the Bible. There may be some others of a similar nature which I have missed. However, most pages are intact, and the Bible is generally readable. Page Condition, Volume 2: Same inscription inside front cover as in volume one. Endpaper detached and wrinkled (possibly torn as well) but present. Title torn/trimmed at edges. Upside down antique brown ink inscription on lower edge of title page. Appears to read Anna Jones' Bible August 184_ on margin along bound page edge. Pages 459-462 (Covering some leaves of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes) are missing. Large tears and wrinkles with some losses on pages 463-464 in volume 2. (Pagination continues between volumes). Torn pages include: p. 785-786 have moderately large tears minor loss of text (this is in Macabees); 789-790 has the corner torn away with loss of 3-4 verses; 821 torn in several places with text loss; 823-824 torn and wrinkled with some text loss; between 844-845 is a dried, flattened plant; 865 tear at lower edge; 875-876 torn with loss of text; 877-878 torn with loss of text; Large tear across 879-880; 909-910 torn at upper page edge corner loss of page number; 971-972 wrinkled; ragged at some edges. Ownership History: On the inside front cover of both volumes is written an inscription which reads, "This Bible belonged to Samuel Jones father of Mrs. -????- Raymond + grandfather of Dr. L.R. Raymond." A Google search returned little information about Dr. Raymond, except that there appears to have been one associated with Oberlin College (or at least living nearby) in Ohio in the 19th century. It is unclear whether this is the same Dr. Raymond. Straight tears across plates refer to those tears, which although the shape may be jagged, do not result in any paper loss and can thus be repaired with all pieces in place, e.g., no loss of paper. Reference: Hills' #29, which reads, "This is Thomas' folio edition, issued in two volumes. Vol i has two preliminary leaves (frontispiece and title), text to end of Proverbs, and 14 plates. Vol ii has three preliminary leaves (frontispiece, title same as above, and blank leaf), text beginning with Ecclesiastes, Apocrypha (colophon reads: This Folio Edition of the Bible, and one In Royal Quarto, were printed by Isaiah Thomas, at Worcester, Massachusetts, in the year mdccxci), NT followed by Index, and 23 plates. All plates are executed by American engravers: J. H. Seymour, J. Norman, S. Hill, and A. Doolittle. Division of material in volumes differs in some copies; also the number and position of plates vary. NN has two copies: one with 48 copperplates (two are missing), and another in one vol. Also issued without Apocrypha. Isaiah Thomas, whom Benjamin Franklin called "the Baskerville of America," was one of the notable publishers of the Bible during the early days of the Republic. He began his publishing venture in Boston, together with Zechariah Fowle, in 1770. Shortly thereafter he became sole owner of the firm. At this time he published the newspaper Massachusetts Spy, in which he supported the colonial cause. During the Revolutionary War he moved his presses and types to Worcester, Massachusetts, where he built up a large business. He also established branches in other cities: Thomas & Andrews, Boston; Thomas, Andrews & Penniman, Albany; Thomas, Andrews & Butler, Baltimore; and Thomas & Co., Walpole, New Hampshire. In 1790, Mr. Thomas announced his plan for the publication of a folio Bible and also for one in Royal quarto (see following entry, No 30). He made a special effort to procure a correct text for his Bible and examined about thirty editions of the King James Version printed at various dates by different publishers. His text was further examined by a number of clergymen of Worcester and by other qualified people who compared it with no less than eight copies. (O'Callaghan, p 40.) It has the correct reading in i Tim 4:16, the doctrine. Thomas published one folio edition and several quarto, octavo, and duodecimo editions. See 1797, No 57, for note on Thomas' standing type for his duodecimo editions." SHIPPING: FREE shipping and secure packaging for all 50 US States and Territories. Additional overseas fee apply.
