Burton The Exceedingly Scarce Rennell Map of Northern Africa! Printed: 1791 The seldom found North Africa Map by James Rennell illustrating the latest discoveries known of Slave Coast and in Northern Africa in 1790, though so very little was known at all, when Africa was considered impenetrable. Also showing routes from James Bruce's epic journey and search for the Nile source. This map was produced prior to Mungo Park's expedition, when virtually nothing was known of Africa's vast interior. An inset shows the coast of Benin, drawn by Roberts Norris. Original Antique Engraved Map, Very Good condition and well preserved, remarkably bright and with strong impression. Map text is in German. At widest margins, sheet measures approximately 20 inches x 15 inches (51.5cm x 38cm). A most desirable early Africa map elucidating pioneering work of foremost explorers. Major James Rennell (1742-1830), is known as the "Father of Indian Geography", and "the Father of Oceanography" for his work charting ocean currents in the Indian and Ocean and around Africa. He performed important studies on the geography of northern Africa, evident in his introductions to the travel narratives of Mungo Park and Hornemann. Rennell published a narrative in the Proceedings of the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior Parts of Africa (1791), titled "The Construction of the Map of Africa." James Bruce made two journeys in 1765 among the Berber peoples of the interior and then traveled through North Africa, the Aegean, and the Levant. From 1768 to 1772 he was engaged in the adventures on which his fame depends. Traveling first up the Nile in 1769 and then along the Red Sea, he finally reached Massawa, the main port of what became the Eritrean province of Ethiopia, reaching the headstream of the Blue Nile, then thought to be the Nile’s main source. In 1790 Bruce released his five-volume work titled 'Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile'. Robert Norris was a British trader who travelled from Grighe on the Slave Coast to Abomey, the capital of Dahomey, where in February and December of 1772 he visited the King of Damoney. In 1788 Norris gave evidence on behalf of the Liverpool trade before the committee of the privy council appointed to inquire into the slave question following vigorous agitation by the abolitionists.
