Printed: Paris, Dépôt de la Marine, 1797 A remarkably preserved map of Alaska's Bucareli Bay in the Alaskan Panhandle. An early chart based on the manuscript maps of Maurelle & Quadra, as well as mapping by La Perouse, represents the northernmost explorations by Spanish navigators. It was named after New Spain's Viceroy, and Bucarelli Sound at 55°15'N was for a time thought to be the entrance to the northwest passage. It is located about 50 miles west of Ketchikan. The chart shows many soundings around the harbor shoreline. Map shows the Gulf of Esquibel, San Fernando Island, San Juan Bautista Island, Port Real Marina, and Port Refugio, also showing points and bays, channels and many small islands. An original map from 1797 in Near Fine condition, with watermark. Relief shown by hachures, depths by soundings. Map text is in French. Sheet measures approximately 23 inches x 34 inches (58.5 cm x 86 cm). Image measures approximately 19.5 inches x 27 inches (49.5 cm x 68.5 cm) Bucareli Bay is in the Alexander Archipelago, southeastern Alaska. It is located off the western coast of Prince of Wales Island, between Baker Island and Suemez Island. To the east it connects to various waterways, such as San Alberto Bay. To the west it opens directly upon the Pacific Ocean. According to the USGS, the name Bucareli was given in 1775 by Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, who called the bay Puerto y Entrada de Bucareli, in honor of Antonio María de Bucareli y Ursúa, then viceroy of New Spain. In the 1790s George Vancouver, who had access to a variety of Spanish maps, called the bay Puerto del Baylio Bucareli. Francisco Antonio Mourelle was present with Quadra at Bucareli Bay and wrote about seeing the light of erupting volcanos, although he was likely seeing something else, perhaps forest fires. The Spanish repeatedly visited Bucareli Bay in the late 1700s. Ignatio de Arteaga, along with Quadra and Mourelle, visited in 1779. Jean-Francois de Galoup, Comte de La Perouse commanded a French scientific expedition to the Pacific in 1785-88. Recognized as one the foremost naval commanders and navigators in France, he was selected by King Louis XVI to complete Captain James Cook's exploration of the western Pacific. The British Admiralty provided scientific equipment to measure variations in magnetic compass readings and with the latest instruments for determining longitude. La Perouse explored the coasts of the Gulf of Alaska and northwestern North America in search of the fabled Northwest Passage. After leaving America his expedition continued on to Asia where he explored from Macao to Kamchatka and the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. La Perouse was meticulous in sending copies of his extensive logs, maps and surveying information via other ships as well as overland. La Perouse was shipwrecked in 1788, but his narrative, maps, and views survived and were published in 1797. Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
