Burton Original Antique Engraved Map Map Title: Charte der Basses Strasse Zwischen Neu Süd Wallis u. Van Diemens Land. Printed: Weimar, 1800 A charming miniature map of Australia’s Bass Strait and Tasmania, then named Van Diemen’s Land. Also shows the southern coast of New South Wales, King Island, Three Hummock Island, Hunter Island, the Kent Group, the Furneaux Group and Banks Strait. This is an original engraved map. Unobtrusive chips to margin as seen in picture below, otherwise in very Good condition, and retaining a strong impression. Suitable for framing. Sheet measures approximately 7.5 inches x 4 inches (19 cm x 11 cm). Bass Strait separates Tasmania from Australia’s mainland, Victoria in particular, and was first discovered by a European in 1798, Matthew Flinders who named it after his ship's doctor George Bass. This is an original map from a multi-volume scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy.
