Burton Original Antique Engraved Map Map Title: Charte von Isle de France oder Mauritius reducirt nach Charles Grant Viscount de Vaux neuer Charte von dieser Insel.Printed: Weimar, 1802 A spectacular map of Mauritius, here comprising ten separate districts including the Trois Islots. Shows Port Louis and the northern islands Coin de Mire, Ile Plate, Ile Ronde, and Ile aux Serpents. From the 1801 map by Charles Grant, vicomte de Vaux. This is an original engraved map. Very Good condition, and retaining a strong impression. Suitable for framing. Sheet measures approximately 9.5 inches x 8 inches (24 cm x 20 cm). Text is in German. Charles Grant, vicomte de Vaux, served as a sous-lieutenant in the Scots Company of the Garde du Roi, and by 1781 was a lieutenant colonel. His father, Louis-Charles Grant de Vaux, had been in command of the Isle of Bourbon. Grant was in exile for a while, and devoted much of his time to writing. His earliest publication, ‘Le Dauphin Enlevé’, appeared in 1793. Fascinated by his ancestry, he published ‘Mémoires de la Maison Grant’ in London in 1796. The vicomte’s most ambitious work was published in 1801 and titled, ‘The History of Mauritius, or the Isle of France, and The Neighbouring Islands, from Their First Discovery to the Present Time; Composed Principally from the Papers and Memoirs of Baron Grant, who Resided Twenty Years in the Island, by His Son, Charles Grant, Viscount de Vaux’, from which this map was drawn. This is an original map from a multi-volume scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy.
