Burton     Original Antique Engraved Map Map Title: Neue Charte von S. Domingo entworfen von Leyritz Levassor and Bourjolly Colonisten. Printed: Weimar, 1804 Printed: Weimar, 1804 A very scarce colour map of Hispaniola island, printed in Haiti’s year of independence, 1804, commemorating a most significant historic event. The remainder of the island was then a Spanish colony named ‘Santo Domingo’, until 1844 when Juan Pablo Duarte would claim independence and name the country ‘República Dominicana’. This remarkable map includes smaller islands Tortuga, Gonâve and the Cayemites, Saona, Île à Vache, Catalina, Beata and Altapela. This is an engraved map with original hand color outline.  Very Good condition, and retaining a strong impression. Suitable for framing. Sheet measures approximately 13 inches x 17 inches (33 cm x 43 cm).   Hispaniola the second largest island in the Caribbean Sea, divided into two countries today, the Republic of Haiti is in the west and the Dominican Republic in the east. In the late 18th century, Haiti's nearly half million slaves revolted under Toussaint L'Ouverture, and after a hard and bloody struggle, became the first black republic to declare its independence in 1804. Today there are many historic monuments remembering this; one of the largest is La Citadelle Laferriere.   This is an original map from a multi-volume scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy.   Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
