Burton Original Antique Engraved Map Map Title: Charte von der Westindischen Insel Martinique. [Map of Martinique in the West Indies] Printed: Weimar, 1804 A charming and scarce map of the island of Martinique in the Caribbean Sea, then passionately coveted by the French and English, and also ruled by slavery-driven commerce. Features a detailed coastline, Mount Pelée and the Carbet Mountains (Pitons du Carbet), though very little else in charted in the interior. This is an original engraved map. Very Good condition, and retaining a strong impression. Suitable for framing. Sheet measures approximately 7.5 inches x 9.25 inches (19 cm x 23.5 cm). Britain captured the island during the Seven Years' War, holding it from 1762 to 1763. However, the sugar trade made the island so valuable to the royal French government, that at the Treaty of Paris which ended the Seven Years War they exchanged the entirety of Canada in order to regain Martinique as well as the neighboring island of Guadeloupe. Between 1794 and 1815, there was a strong British interest in Martinique, with Britain controlling the island during the French Revolutionary Wars from 1794 to 1802, after which the British returned the island to the French with the Treaty of Amiens and Napoléon Bonaparte reinstated slavery. Led by Victor Schoelcher, the French officially abolished slavery in 1848. This is an original map from a multi-volume scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy.
