Description
PLEASE READ THIS FIRST AND COMPLETELY: I believe this chart may have been used on a Whaling Voyage. I can not be sure of it, but this chart was bought at an auction here in Maine. The estate had distant connections to the Whaling Industry. Other Whaling artifacts were also sold at the same auction from the same estate. This chart has numerous courses drawn with marks where sightings would have been made. On these courses are notations such as "Far West Track of April 1855", Track of Far West in July 1855", "Far West in October 1855", and the like. Was the Vessel the "Far West" ?????????.  These trips are all from the area of "The Society Islands" and the "Georgian Islands" in the South Pacific below the Equator. These islands are in the middle of the chart. As you can see in the pictures there is discoloration in that area of the chart as if someone (over a period of time) was leaning on the chart making these route notes, and thereby soiled the chart. There are also numerous notations such as: "January 5th 1856, Saw an Island in Latt 11'-30" S, South long by.... 165' 24" west, not laid down in the navigation on chart ...  .... Sun 10 to 12 miles off deck". and "Vessels touching at Horn Island will find two islands with a good Ship Channel between them, the Harbor is on the SW part of the North Island, Plenty of supplies wood and water".  Most of the notations are in the area of the Islands mentioned above with some more routes  and notations in the area of the Galapagos and the coast of Peru. You can see where there are no notations and no soiling in the area of Australia. The only soiling is in the area where the chart was being used (my speculation). I can see this chart laid out and rolled from either end so that the only exposed area was where the notations were being made. On the far right is a rip in the chart which has been expertly repaired with sail twine. I CAN NOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS WAS USED ON A WHALING SHIP, BUT I BELIEVE IT WAS. You be the judge.   You are bidding on ONE 1825 chart from J. W. NORIE. From my research this chart was updated circa 1850 even though it was not marked as such. I have been told that the earlier edition did not have as much detail on the western end of Australia as that area had not been inhabited and mapped yet in 1825 but was so in the 1840s. This chart is not titled but only has across it in large letters: "SOUTH PACIFIC".   Across the bottom is: "London, Published as the Act directs, October 1st, 1825 by  J. W. Norie & Co. at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy nO. 157 Leadenhall Street.".   PLEASE ASK IF YOU WANT HIGHER RESOLUTION PICTURES. PLEASE BE SPECIFIC, THANKS.    THIS IS A BLUE BACK PAPER CHART WITH CLOTH EDGES.   PRINTED IN:  "London, Published as the Act directs, October 1st, 1825 by  J. W. Norie & Co. at the Navigation Warehouse and Naval Academy nO. 157 Leadenhall Street.".   SIZE: Total paper size is 32-1/2" wide by 72" tall. Chart itself is slightly smaller.   CONDITION:  For the most part this chart is in very very good condition for a 158 (plus) year old chart which was probably used on a Whaling Vessel. The 12 inches to the East has some rough paper and the one repair mentioned above. There are a couple of repairs to the blue back paper. The chart is soiled where it would have been used (once again, my speculation-not a known fact). PLEASE CHECK THE PICTURES.  The remainder of the chart is in very good condition with the occasional wrinkle and occasional spot. There is some aging of the paper.  The cloth edging is detached somewhat in the lower mid to left bottom area. The pictures show the chart well. PLEASE ASK IF YOU WANT HIGHER RESOLUTION PICTURES. THE PICTURES SHOW BETTER IN A DIRECT EMAIL. SHIPPING & HANDLING:  PLEASE NOTE: I SHIP ONCE A WEEK. SHIPPING TO THE 48 CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES WILL BE $12.00  VIA U.S.P.S. PRIORITY CLASS MAIL.  CHART WILL BE SHIPPED IN A REUSABLE MAILING TUBE. INSURANCE IS EXTRA. OTHER MAILING AREAS WILL BE DETERMINED BY DISTANCE AND TYPE REQUESTED. I ship via U.S.P.S. only. PAYMENT METHODS:  I ACCEPT MONEY ORDERS, PERSONAL CHECKS,  AND PAYPAL IN THAT ORDER OF PREFERENCE.        PLEASE CHECK OUT MY OTHER AUCTIONS.
