This outstanding solid walnut roll-top secretary with upper bookshelf/hutch/curio was the very first machine-made secretary to arrive by train in Alliance, Ohio, circa 1870-1880. This is straight from the current owner who inherited from her parents and remembers it growing up in Northern Ohio. This beautiful unrestored secretary stands 83 1/8" tall (will fit in most modern homes), 36 1/4" wide, 22" total depth; 18 3/4" deep at lower drawers; 13 1/4" deep at upper trim; 12" deep at cupboard area. It has some Eastlake and Renaissance Revival properties common to the period. Burled walnut veneer and a decorated band accentuates the lower doors. Original factory hand-incised Roman numerals are present on several non-finished pieces of wood, dating the early period of machine-fabricated furniture in the Northeastern states. The original glass is still present in the RH side of the cabinet. The other side had been replaced in the 1950/60's. It also features dual-wooden wheels. Adjustable height shelves are featured in the cabinet. The brass pull-ring knobs are believed to be the originals, but cannot be confirmed as this secretary was inherited by the current owner in 1953. An original key that opens the cabinets and all drawers is retained and actually works! The roll top key is currently missing, although the owner is confident she has it somewhere. No guarantees, however, on finding or receiving this rare key. Overall, the condition of this piece of furniture is Very Good Original. It has been refinished in the 1970's. No modifications were made. There is a chip/broken trim at rear edge of top. It cannot be seen from ground level viewing (see photo). There is a chip/missing piece of wood on LH side near roll trim (see photo). There is a fine crack in roll top cylinder (see photo) and a repair to secure real wheel on rear LH lower side (see photo). Ink staining on roll top drawer and other staining present on pigeon-hole drawers (see photos). Of course, normal wear and tear for a 135 year old item! Due to the size and weight of this secretary, there will be no shipping. Winning bidder agrees to pick up this furniture at the residential location within 2 weeks of auction end. Secretary is located in Dublin, Ohio, 43016. The secretary breaks down into 2 easier to manage pieces for hauling (cabinet, lower drawer/desk). The seller will assist in this local pick-up. Once the winning bidder has made payment and payment has cleared, Seller will facilitate a meeting between the buyer and owner of the secretary in order to have the furniture removed from its current location. Buyer is completely responsible for removal of secretary from current premises. Driveway access available for a medium sized truck. Secretary is sold used, as-is, without warranty or return.
