Description
"12 Inch Terrestrial Globe" 12 Chromolithograph Gores, Graduated Full Meridian, 42 cm diameter zodiac/horizon ring stand, 56 cm height, Edinburgh, circa 1887 We are pleased to offer this scarce and attractive terrestrial globe marketed by the American Globe and School Supply Company of Seneca Falls, New York.  The globe itself was in fact made by the Edinburgh, Scotland firm of W. & A. K. Johnston, founded by the renowned geographer Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871) - the American Globe firm imported the globe and simply applied a label over the Johnston cartouche, as they later did with many Rand McNally globes as well.  Typically the few surviving examples of the globe are mounted on a basic tripod stand - this example is unusual in that the stand features a full zodiac/horizon ring suggesting that this was the "deluxe model" of the globe.  Although nearly identical to the example in the David Rumsey Collection which they have dated to 1890, this is an earlier edition of the globe.  The Rumsey example of the globe shows North and South Dakota as separate states (1889) while this example still shows an undivided Dakota Territory.  However the globe does show the Bechuanaland Protectorate (1885) in what is now Botswana; hence our estimate of 1887 as publication date for this handsome Victorian globe. Top view: To get a sense of globe detail, consider that the distance from Bombay (Mumbai) to Calcutta (Kolkata) as seen in the enlarged photo below measures just 4 cm actual size: The globe reveals that parts of the African interior were still unknown even in the late 19th century - note tentative lakes and speculative river courses: Analemma: Graduated full meridian: Globe depicts isothermal lines for January and July as well as currents: Antarctica only mapped in a few small coastal sections: Note "Indian Territory" in what is now Oklahoma: The resller's cartouche, glued on top of the Johnston original claims that the globe was "manufactured by" the firm in Seneca Falls, a claim they also stated on globes they resold which were made by Rand McNally:   St. Petersburg in Russian Empire, Oslo shown as Christiania: Hour circle at north pole: Austro-Hungarian Empire, Cyprus shown as British possession (1878): View of stand with globe removed - note brass hardware: Note hachure work for topography: Condition - Please note carefully:  Globe is in overall fair to good condition and photos and following description should be carefully evaluated with regard to damage and abrasion.  The stand exhibits several areas of abrasion and damage as can be seen in photos thereof including two areas of small paper loss to zodiac ring; otherwise in good condition with solid construction.  The globe itself exhibits numerous small areas of significant abrasion with loss of printing, most notably in the eastern United States and adjacent Atlantic Ocean as can be seen in the photos thereof.  The amount of actual text loss is negligible outside this area.  Otherwise globe is quite well preserved with gores tightly glued and well aligned on a heavy plaster ball, no cracks or stains - a very well built globe with more robust workmanship and materials than was typical of the era.  In all, a handsome if somewhat hard used example of a scarce Victorian globe that will make a fine addition to any collection or decor.  Inquiries welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions on eBay.
