Our lots are genuine folk art, designed in the long traditional manner.     LOT NAME coat CHAPAN, is a generic term which refers to the padded coats of identical cut, worn by both men and women in Central Asia. The chapan was an integral part of the wardrobe of any town-dwelling, Central Asia adult male and was the standard robe for wearing outdoors. The costly silk robes were given by the khans as gifts and rewards. ORIGIN THE EMIRATE OF BUKHARA from the Sogdian "lucky place" has been one of the main centres of Turkic civilization during its history. It has been inhabited for at least five millennia and the city itself has existed for half that time. Located on the Silk Road, the city has long been a center of trade, scholarship, culture, and religion. AGE the late 19th century MATERIALS The fabric of this chapan "Adras" has been patterned with the ikat technique, an urban men's skill in Central Asia, in which pattern is produced by binding the warp threads tightly according to the desired pattern and dyeing them before attaching the warp to the loom for weaving the cloth. The fabric is thus woven after the pattern has been dyed into the warp. Natural silk warp, cotton weft, corded interlacing. Dyed with natural dyes. Lined with Russian cotton. CONDITION good antique, some wears SIZE length-47 in, chest - 48 in, From the end of one sleeve up to another - 59 in    . . We're honored to be able to offer you the antique brilliantly coloured silk ikat chapan, or coat, was made in Bukhara, Uzbekistan in about 1890s. Designing fabrics is a remarkable phenomenon of popular art in Uzbekistan. The art of designing fabrics reflects the periods of its complex century-old history, and gives a memorable description of the creative work of thousand talented masters of art. Uzbek textiles have not only historical and functional significance but also great artistic value. The most interesting was the decoration of Abr silk and half-silk fabrics and very rare the decoration of paper fabrics. The method of  Abrbandi (ikat) consisted of reservation of separate parts of the base by means of the web with the following dying according to the pattern and colours of the material. This method created a striking artistic effect, creating patterns with blurred outlines. The design of Abr fabrics showed a peculiar broad pattern of rainbow coloured lancets. The most attractive thing in Uzbek fabrics is the beauty of their colour and the pure dyes which are applied in delicate combinations. The colouring is driven to the utmost stress, either resorting to sharp constrasts or delicate harmony. Bukhara ikat or Abr silk is a miracle of decorative art in Uzbekistan. The art of designing fabrics in Bukhara has a style of its own, and its the best specimens came into being where the great masters found patterns which were logic in composition and masterly performed. The traditional Bukhara ikat is a monumental style with brightly coloured large-scale designed patterns. The standard Central Asian loom was a simple treadle loom and in Bukhara the weaver sat on the ground with the treadles in a pit at his feet. Towards the front of the treadle loom, shafts were laid across its width and were attached to treadles which the weaver could use to lower or raise the shafts. Two shafts were needed to weave a plain-weave ikat while satin ikat could require up to eight shafts. On completion of the weaving process, the ikat was cut from the loom and the surface given a finishing lustre of egg white, a special glue or by beating with a wooden mallet. . . Offered Chapan is made from traditional designed Bukhara ikat corded Adras. It is coloured with seven saturated colours, dyed naturally. Colours are raspberry, turquoise, blue, yellow, green, broun and black. Before inexpensive industrial aniline dyes brightened the look of all textiles in approximately 1900 with their harsher colors, the cloths of Bukhara were dependent on pomegranate peel for black dyes, crushed cochineal insects for deep reds, the madder plant for lighter reds and mauves, and other sources for a wide palette of greens, yellows, indigos, pinks and violets, all used extensively by the ikat dyers. The first entails stretching the undyed warp threads on a frame: The design of Central Asian ikats is created solely on the warp, not on the weft. The next step is to sketch on the threads an outline of the intended patterns. The threads are then removed from the frame, and water-repellent bindings of cotton and wax are tied to the parts of the threads that are not meant to be dyed in the first color. The threads are then immersed in the bath of dye. Afterward, the bindings are removed. The result is threads dyed along some parts of their length only. The dyed sections are now bound with more cotton and wax, and the bundled threads are immersed in a second dye bath. The dyer can, of course, overlap colors to mix them: For example, he could start with yellow, and then, if the second color is blue, he could plan for overlaps that will appear green. This process is repeated as many times as necessary to produce the color pattern the designer seeks. When dyeing is finished, the threads are taken to the weaving workshops. In comparison to the enormous effort expended on dyeing, the weaving is relatively simple, if laborious. This Adras consists of seven colors and some shadows, so you can imagine how much time it needed. It is patterned with feathers, paisley-bote, diamonds, pomegranates. Plant ornaments are reflected by stylized images, this composition is well known as "a tree of life".   The robe is cotton lined and bordered with manual weaved black silk braiding.
