It’s made of solid oak and has a dark stain. It has features, which you may expect from a Victorian mantel, such as columns with ionic capitals, two shelves (one serpentine and one straight), beaded molding, and a beveled glass mirror. However, this mantel has a unique feature: a cabinet. The cabinet is definitely old, and may very well be antique as well, but I’m almost certain it isn’t original to the mantel’s design. The cabinet is made of heartpine and has 2 adjustable shelves. There are holes on the inner sides of the cabinet for dowels to hold up the shelves. You may notice in the photos that the bottom shelf is supported by 2 boards, that is because we didn’t have enough dowels; the boards are not attached to the cabinet. The cabinet had 2 doors at some point, but now only the hinges remain. If you want to use the mantel for a fireplace, the cabinet could be removed (refer to the last photo for an idea of how it would look without the cabinet). If you like, we could remove it for no extra charge before shipping. The mantel is in excellent condition! There are only 2 tiny flaws on the shelf under the mirror: a chip in outer right corner and a small strip, which broke off from the center (see the second to last photo for close ups). We didn’t strip and sand the mantel because the finish is in good shape; after some touch-ups it would look even better. The bottom shelf of the cabinet has a few patches of clear glue and paper stuck to it. We could remove them for you, but we would like to know for sure that you want to keep the cabinet before doing so. The mirror is fully intact and only has a cluster of worn spots of silvering on the right side, underneath the glass, which look like black specs of paint. We tried to photograph them, but they are too small to be picked up by the camera. This is quite a deal! Large, ornate, antique, oak mantels such as this normally go for much more than the list price, however, we got for a good price and now we offer it to you for a good price. * We’re also selling another mantel (see our store), with a similar design for a similar price—great opportunity to have 2 semi-matching mantels in your home!
