C 1815 SET 8 PHILADELPHIA FEDERAL DINING CHAIRS This exceptional set of the highest quality Philadelphia dining chairs, comprising two arm chairs and six side chairs, exhibit the very best of Philadelphia style and quality of craftmanship of the early 19th century. Each chair has a curved tablet back with moulded inset in solid figured mahogany and similar moulded central horizontal support, between backswept , tapering rails ending in extended ears. The seat rails have rounded corners , supported on turned legs with an tapering rounded spade foot below a bulb with a spool shaped torus above. The back legs are outswept. The armchairs have downswept tapering arms ending in a modified scroll, on finely turned baluster supports. The slip seat frames are poplar and the upholstery has been recently restored retaining all the extant original materials. Upholstered in a striped silk fabric. This type of tapering foot is attributed to Philadelphia cabinetmaker Henry Connelly by William Horner in his 'Blue Book of Philadelphia Furniture. Woods: Mahogany; poplar. Slip seat frames; poplar; Condition: excellent condition, original finish, original pine glue blocks front and rear, minor old repairs.
