Description
This horn belongs in a museum somewhere. This is a one of a kind. I bought this horn years ago with the intention of restoring it into playing condition. I decided that the painting might be damaged during the restoration, so I never had it restored. It is not playable but appears to be a keyed bugle in the key of Eb. The horn was most likely made sometime around 1830 and has 7 CLAMSHELL keys. Really rare.     The painting appears to be depicting a war ca. 100 yrs before the horn was made. I am not a historian and I know nothing about art and paintings. I do have Ralph Dudgeon's book about keyed bugles. Ralph has also seen the bugle and believes it was made in Markneukirchen.     I did my best to determine online what countries the uniforms where depicting. It appears to be Bavarian to me. There are many Heraldry Marks on the horn that may be Bavarian also. Several people have speculated about the painting. Some people believe it was some sort of presentation horn. I do not see an artists name anywhere, but that doesn't mean someone else might see one or maybe recognize the style etc. There are castles with cannons firing, men on horseback, a trumpet with flag and heraldry, and much more. I did my best to take good pics and to show that some of the paint is off.     2 mysteries in my mind. 1. Who could have painted this horn? If someone could attribute the painting to certain artist, then what is it worth? The value of the painting might be more than the value of the bugle as a musical instrument . There is very fine detail in the painting. 2. Why paint a battle scene of a war 100 yrs before the bugle was made?   I understand Maximillian II was a patron of the Arts. Could it be that this was done in his era to commemorate a battle nearly 100 years earlier? Since he came into power in 1848 could it be a painting depicting the end of the Austrian Succession in 1748 and maybe a 100 year anniversary? Is it a presentation bugle for someone in royalty? Can you run down the family by the many heraldry markings? I can't and don't know how.     If someone can unravel these questions the bugle might be a very significant historical piece. I don't know where to start. I'M SETTING THE RESERVE AT WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE THE VALUE OF THE BUGLE WITHOUT A PAINTING! We'll see how much the painting is worth in the auction. DO I HAVE A BUY IT NOW OPTION? Maybe, if you email me with your ideas. I can relist it with a buy it now if I think it is a fair price.     I would like to reinvest some of my money into our Baroque Trumpet Ensemble. Check us out at http://kybaroquetrumpets.com/      Yes, I'm still interested in J W Pepper instruments. Email me if you have something early and interesting.     I will accept international bidders, but, you must use paypal. I reserve the right to withdraw your bid if you have excessive negative feedback or you have 0 feedback. Feel free to email me if you think you might know something about the painting.     If the bugle doesn't meet the reserve I'll just have it restored to playing condition and use it in one of the civil war bands I play in. This bugle is perfect for that. People were still using keyed bugles during the civil war era. Remember, the reserve is low for a clamshell 7 key Eb bugle. It needs to be in a serious collectors hands or a museum. How many clamshell keyed bugles have you seen on ebay? Probably none. AND THIS IS ONE OF A KIND WITH THIS PAINTING. What comparisons do you have? None. Thanks. On Nov-28-08 at 08:25:49 PST, seller added the following information:What I mean by "Clamshell" is, the keys are like a clamshell on the outside. They are not flat on top. You will probably have to cut and paste our baroque ensemble address into your browser. Ebay usually won't let you have a link. Or you can google us  "   kentucky baroque trumpets       "              here is the site again,  http://kybaroquetrumpets.com/On Dec-05-08 at 17:14:27 PST, seller added the following information:There are also dents in this bugle. Most are shown in the photos. There are some on the back bow too. One that includes the tone hole. I try and describe the best I can. 100% feedback. I don't want you to have any surprises.
