VICTORIAN ANTIQUE CRAZY QUILT   This is an absolute gorgeous antique crazy quilt!  It was made in the late 1800's.  This was acquired from the family who owned the quilt from the start.  Each block is completely embellished with various embroideries.  The embroideries are just amazing!  Materials used are silk, wool, silk velvets, and cotton.  Someone had sewn a newer brown fabric as the backing as well as 12" ruffles on two sides of the quilt.  There are owl, cat, girl with sun bonnet hat, butterfly, man in the moon, boy, initials, painted flower, fans, wheat stalk, dragon fly, ferns, basket, various floral and much, much more.  There is even a piece with hand painted pink roses!   Condition: Very good! For a quilt that is over 100+ years old, there are two small silk patches that have slightly disintegrated due to age.  Both are located at the very corner of the quilt (see last two photos).  The larger one is about 3" x 3" with some restoration done but not much; the smaller one (next to the fans) have two smaller holes not larger than size of dime.  It has been kept in a cedar chest with very minimal handling.  No loose stitchings.  Colors are still very vibrant!  It is a very delicate piece.  Comes from smoke and pet free home.   Size: 64" x 78" - original quilt; 88" x 78" with added ruffles   I had this appraised at $2,000 about 8 years ago.  It would have been more if the newer backing and the ruffles weren't sewn on.  I guess it is worth more if kept at the original condition - although the backing helped maintained the quilt top condition.  It probably worth a lot more today as this type of quilt at this level of embroiderly is very hard to find.   This is a piece of artwork that represents the American culture and history.  I do indeed hope that it finds a good home where this true American art is appreciated.  I have enjoyed it, so will you for those crazy quilt lovers!   This is a relist.  Pleae read below for additional information: The backing and the ruffles are hand sewn (not machine sewn) along the border of the quilt top.  Someone had inquired if the backing and the ruffles can be removed.  I took it to a professional quilter and was told that they can be if done carefully but cannot guarantee if that would be the case.  However, she does not recommend it as the quilt top is quite old, and it is best to be left alone.  It was a well done job.  Also, addition of the backing and ruffles did not cause any damage to the quilt top as one may perceive.  The stitching from the backing/ruffles are only on the outer border of the quilt top. It appears the ruffles are quite bothersome to some antique quilt lovers.  Again, they can be removed.  I will leave that up to the new owner.  There is no batting inside.  Previously, I mistakently had thought there may be batting inside.  There is not. In addition to the two patches with condition problems listed above, there is another small black piece that has been restored (re-sewn by hand).  It is in one of the photos, above the cat.
