Description
Brown AestheticTransferware Biscuit Jar or Sugar Pot Staffordshire England c. 1880 This fanciful transferware biscuit jar dates to c.1880, the height of the Aesthetic Movement of design. The piece comes from a large collection of biscuit jars and pots, though originally it migh have been used as a sugar pot or sucrier, a part of a complete tea set. The rare, bulbous round pot stands about 4 3/4" tall to the top of the button finial.. The piece is transfer printed in rich bittersweet chocolate brown with blue ponded pearlware glaze on the bottom. The pot features a playful medley of Japanese influenced cartouches and mons, arranged assymetrically around the body and the lid. A whimsical Japanese caricature of a man wearing a kimono and dancing with a butterfly is set in to amulti-layered fan surrounded by geometric and floral symbols, a noteable example of the Victorian love of nature and art for art's sake. We have not found this pattern in any standard references. It has some similarities to the JAVA pattern by Anthony Shaw, but the pattern name and maker is unknown. We found it in England, and we assume it hails from the Staffordshire region of England in the mid-to-late 19th century. The piece has no maker's marks. The piece is in great condition, with a shallow chip on the inside of the lid, and no other chips, cracks or reparis. Overall crazing consistent with age. This biscuit pot is one of our favorites, with folkart charm brought to pottery. Offered as is, an outstanding example. This amusing covered jar will make a wonderful addition to your transferware Aesthetic movement and Japanesque or Japanese ceramic collection. We have listed a whimsical array of transferware dishes this week. We are always happy to combine shipping for multiple purchases.
