EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT SINKING JOHN MILFORD MONTAUK 1858 4 PAGE LETTER FROM MAN WHO PULLED THE BODIES FROM SURF Historic letter written immediately after witnessing the wreckage of the The John Milton on the rocks off Montauk Point, New York.The Milton went down taking all 33 aboard with her.Her captain had mistaken the the blinking light of Montauk Lighthouse for a light further west. He had not been informed that Montauk Lighthouse had recently changed from a steady to blinking light.The letter, 4 pages long,was written by Thomas J Mulford of Amagansett, New York,Keeper of Life Saving Station #23and dated March 1 1858, eight days after the tragedy. Letter details finding the bodies of the crew, as well as the captain, captain's log and the wreckage washed ashore. Mulford himself found the Captain's body as well as the ship's log. Letter documents the great difficulty getting from Amagansett to the Point, even in cases of emergency, at the time Insurance is required on all purchases over $50.
