Description
pbarnes Store Early Canadian Tablespoon Canadian silver from the 18th and 19th centuries is perhaps some of the rarest available. During this period the center of silversmithing in Canada was to be found in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. Many of these smiths emigrated from Europe or were British loyalists who left the USA during the upheaval of the revolution. The marks often reflect the close connection between the Maritimes and Scotland. This listing is part of a collection of spoons made in the Maritime Provinces during this period. All information regarding the makers is from “SILVERSMITHS AND RELATED CRAFTSMEN OF THE ATLANTIC PROVINCES’ by Donald C. MacKay. Type...Fiddle Pattern Table SpoonSize... 8” or 20 cm.Condition.. Bowl shows stir wear and small dents ( teeth? ), otherwise good with period script initialsMaker...Wiliam Herman Newman, Halifax Nova Scotia, ca.1850Marks. WHN ( makers mark) Psuedo passant, duty head and “H” indicating Halifax. The marks are VERY tiny.
