Description
English Carved Mirror This elaborately carved mirror was made in England. It was created by prisoners of war between 1775 to 1825 at Dartmoor Prison. These mirror was made from animal bone which was provided by the guards who shared the profits after its sale. The sales provided some comforts for the prisoners. At the top back of the mirror there is a motto of the Order of the Garter that reads HONI SOIT O(Q)UI MAL Y PENSE, which loosely translated means "Shame on him who thinks ill of it". It is decorated with applied leaved and has portraits of English kings. It has an ivory plaque with the English retailer's name Beatrice Cameron at Grosvenor Square London. It's measurements are 32" high by 22" wide. There are small parts that came out but are securely saved in a box for any repair.
