Description
W.& A.K. Johnston Limited, Edinburgh and London Globe is 18" dia. thin sphere of plaster with paper covering of star formations. Dark green-blue in color with off white stars and pictorial figures corresponding to star formations are finely drawn in gold. Degree-date ring is three laminated layers of soft wood with paper covering of sixteen rings showing degrees, part days, days, months, zodiac symbols, etc. Peculiarities of these rings are the amount of days per month, April having thirty one days and May twenty eight days, all the others are correct, totaling 363 days per year. The globe stand: The ring holding the globe appears to be cast copper. This ring is divided into 4 - 90 degree sections, unlike the more modern type having 2 - 180 degree sections. This ring also glides within the stand. The degree - day ring is held in place by a half circle that is supported by the tripod legs ( highly decorative lion paw type ) and two flat straps extending from legs. All of the stand appears to be cast copper. As you can see in the photos there is scuffing at the top and bottom of the globe and a repair done to the degree - date ring, all in all the globe is in nice condition. According to Sotheby's, " English Celestial Globe stand late 19th/ early 20th century globe possibly earlier" Size: 24" x 32" Payment must be made within 48 hrs of bid closing. Buyer may make arrangements for shipping.
