Description
Fine Antique Monocular. Signed in script on the first draw "W & S Jones, 30 Holborn, London". This three section Monocular was made by one of the best scientific instrument makers of the day, W & S Jones, who took over the Adams business stock and trade when Adams died. This instrument extends from 48mm closed to 88mm long when fully extended. The eyepiece has a diameter of 28mm and the diameter of the base is 43mm. The monocular weighs 98 grams. A very good quality opaque cut glass and brass monocular, signed W & S Jones, 30 Holborn, London., London. It is very well preserved, the glass has no chips or cracks, and the lenses are perfect. I have made no attempt to clean the instrument. A fine example of an early nineteenth Century monocular retailed by one of the best London instrument makers. The firm of W & S Jones spanned, through different generations and names for a century and a half. The first William Jones was apprenticed to William Scarlett in London in 1709, and the firm survived until 1859.
