Description

Imaginative & Creative Gift. 1887 Illinois Facts (from the page glued to the back of the frame): Motto: "Prairie State or Sucker State." The name Illinois is derived from the tribe of Indians of the same name: Illinois, signifying "a superior class of men." First permanent settlement by the French at Kaskaskia in 1682; organized as a territory in 1809; and admitted as a state of the Union in 1818. Area: 56,650 square miles. Kaskaskia was the first capital, which was then moved to Vandalia in 1818, and to Springfield in 1836. Chicago, "The Garden City of the West," is the largest city with a population of 503,185. Number of Farms: 255,741, of which 175,497 are occupied by owners. Average value per acre, cleared land: $33.03, wood lands: $23.68. Ranks first in corn, wheat, oats, meat packing, lumber traffic, malt, distilled liquors, and miles of railway. Second in rye, coal, agricultural implements, soap, and hogs. Ranks fourth in hay, potatoes, iron, steel, mules, milk cows, and cattle. Population: 3,077,871, of which 3,031,151 were white, 46,368 colored, 209 Chinese, 3 Japanese, and 140 Indians.
