Welcome to ~FRENCH VINTAGE LINENS AND ANTIQUES~ Where You Will Find Beautiful and Unusual Vintage Linens and Apparel from France ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wishing you and yours a Happy and Peaceful Holiday Season! Our gift to you, our customers, is Free Shipping on all purchases until January 1st 2009 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ Magnificent French Sheet w/ Pillowcases in Fine Linen w/ Drawn Thread Work~ This is a truly stunning example of French needlework of the last century. Surely this sheet and it's matching pillow cases must be said to be of museum quality. Both the sheet and cases are made of the finest linen ('fil de lin' in French) which is somewhat unusual. Often the cases, if they have survived, were made of a finer quality of linen than the sheet so there can be a distinct difference in texture and a slight to very noticable difference in shade of white . That is not the case here. The sheet is made of the same lightest weight, high thread count linen as the European style pillowcases. The upper edge of this magnificent sheet has been designed and worked by a sophisticated and highly talented needlewoman. The border consists of three wide bands of drawn thread work (often referred to as 'hemstitching'--or in French 'jours') of great intricacy which are worked across the entire length of the sheet and along the returns which measure 32 inches. This really is a marvel of embroidery and hemstitching. The same work is repeated around the four sides of the pillow shams but on a smaller scale. The elegantly embroidered monograms, entwined with budding roses, on the sheet and cases read AB. These linens are in Excellent vintage condition, pristine white and without stain. There has only been very minor damage to an edge of one pillowcase- a small tear of about 2 inches. I believe this could be repaired by a skilled needlewoman, but it is hardly noticable. The overall effect of this sophisticated and lavish needlework is richly elegant--or as a French describer might say 'sublime'. This beautiful sheet measures 92 inches by 125 inches long and there is no center seam. The cases measure outside 30 x 31 inches and inside 23 x 25 inches. **************************** I consider this sheet with its matching cases to be a truly rare example of its type and its price reflects that, as well as the price I paid for it. Still I have chosen to make an effort to present items of the highest quality for buyers who are seeking that. This sheet would make a magnificent addition to any elegant bedroom, or could be a fabulous gift for a bride, new mother, or a very special friend. ***************************** FVL #0249 SHIPPING: I ship internationally by French Colissimo.
