Description
Huge brass Bamun woman, EXCEPTIONALType of Object: Brass figure Ethnic Group: Bamun Country of Origin: CameroonMaterials: Cameroon Approximate Age: 20th century?Dimensions: Height is 39 inches. Weight is 40 Lbs. (18.25 KG) Overall Condition: Excellent Damage, Repair: Some oxidation on the surface Additional Information: This is a brass figure depicting a pipe smoking woman has a baby on one hip and a child at her feet; arm with pipe, and arm with baby, appear to have been cast separately and soldered on. This sculpture continues a bronze or brass casting tradition long established at the capital city of Foumbam in Bamoum that flourished after late nineteenth century contact with German colonial officials in providing works for Europeans. This important bronze casting may be an mid 20th century example and evidence of interchange between cultures in the grasslands region of West Africa. There is long tradition of figurative bronze and brass casting in the Western regions of African from Mali to Nigeria, Cameroon and into the greater Congo region and along the Atlantic coast reaching back to as early as the 12th century. This large, complex and detailed depiction of a male figure, most likely a version of a chief, is an example of the imagination and technical skill of the bronze caster in developing a form that is sculpturally descriptive as well as reflecting the artist’s ability to project power in this relatively large bronze figure. This is in fact an interesting bronze casting of some complexity, as the figure is well modeled and executed with great attention to the detail of head, face, body, object and small figures carried by the large one. Detailed scarifications of her body and her hairstyle  reinforce her rank and prestige.  This is a large and dynamic figure  carefully  modeled. It would stand out in any collection of African Art.  I examined this piece and agree with the descriptionNiangi Batulukisi, Ph.D. **W1598** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
