Description
O-113 The important 1915 work on the development of Russian Heraldic shields for the noble families of Imperial Russia authored by Count Lukomsky and Baron Tipolt, with title roughly translating as “Russian Heraldry, The Development and Description of the Coats of Arms”. St. Petersburg, 1915. Consisting of (58) pages of text with several interspersed unpaginated plates, followed by (20) largely full-color chromolithographic plates. Issued in a limited run by the so-called “Imperial Society of Encouragement of The Arts”, the print run is not stated, but is thought to be fewer than 1,000 examples, of which obviously would have been destroyed in the wake of the upheaval occurring less than two years after this was published. A rare and important work on Russian heraldry which should not be missing from any related collection. The book is (24 x 33cm), in the original illustrated card wrappers by Ivan Bilibin. AS with most Russian (and French) books of this period, this was meant to be bound to the specification of the owner, and was issued in a rather flimsy binding. This example is entirely complete and remaining in good condition throughout, however the thin paper covering of the spine has largely disappeared, leaving this disbound. This will obviously need to be bound, as intended, to the tastes and requirements of the new owner. A beautiful, scarce and important book. We note one other example of this in similar condition recently offered for more than two times our opening bid. Packed Weight: Under 5kg.
