The more abundant wool rugs of Kashan are less distinctive. Still, they are among the most tightly woven Persian rugs, averaging 196 knots to the square inch, although there are finer grades as well. As would be expected, Kashans are asymmetrically knotted on a cotton foundation, except for a small number of earlier pieces with silk warps. The wefts are often dyed blue. Although most Kashan rugs are in wool, the splendid heritage of weaving-in silk continues. Until the last several decades, when silk began to be used extensively in Qum, the city held a virtual monopoly in Persia on the production of this type of rug. The medallion design is not as common in the silk carpets as it is in the wool carpets, and variations on the tree-of-life theme are frequently found.
