Description
OK, Just so you understand, I am not trying to be evasive.  I will tell you everything I know about this very pleasing claret jug.  Just a hair shy of 12 inches, this beautiful claret jug spoke to me from across a room.  There was a lot of silver, a really fabulous hot water reservoir, another really fabulous multiple piece meat platter, and then a number of other sort of insignificant serving pieces, that this family used for years.  I got to talking with a couple of the women and, as it happens, one of them was a niece (maybe 45 years old) who had fond memories of polishing silver each year before holidays.  I think this piece is the oldest of the lot.  Now, let's talk about what it is made of.  I see no hints of base metal.  I suppose it could have been replated.  Maybe.  I don't think so.  Besides its appearance, the feel is soooo right.  You know how sterling should feel?  You know how it should warm quickly to the touch?  Well, that's the instinctive stuff.  As for marks, there are 2 initials, really tiny, on the bottom.  I'm going to see if a jeweler with better eyes and better magnifying can help me, but each time I look through my glass, the 2 initials look like different letters.  I have priced this wine jug as antique silver plate.  The lid to this jug has a cupid bow shape of an irregular nature that says hand craftsmanship.  The senior sales staff at Bailey, Banks, & Biddle thought it seemed like sterling, but had no test kit.  The owner of a local store that sells only silver jewelry and also works on silver thought it was solid silver of undetermined origin.  My own silver expert took one look and in his British voice snapped out that it is English and wanted to know where I had gotten it.  Oh yes, and the usual run of the mundane and obvious.  It is in fabulous condition.  I polished it with my bare hands, another one of the ways that sterling handles so very differently from plate.  The tarnish melted under my bare handed fondling.  OK, so I really like silver objects.  Deep sighs.  It shows, right?
