This question summarizes the debate which opposed two great prehistorians in the 1950s/60s, the french François Bordes and the american Lewis Binford, one of the leader of the "New Archaeology". The question was to know why various assemblies of Mousterian tools followed one another in stratigraphy, but never in the same order. François Bordes explained this difference by a group dynamic, each assembly of tools is the fact of only one group of humans. Each group has its own techniques which confers a particular assembly. Bordes thus establishes a typology according to the tools assemblies observed in an article written in 1953 : 1) Typical Mousterian : without or with few handaxes, sides scrapers and tools made with the levallois technique. 2) Mousterian of Acheulean Tradition (MTA) : with cordiform handaxes, backed knives, denticulates and tools which precede the upper Paleolithic period. 3)Mousterian Ferrassie type : with many side-scrapers and fine tools made with levallois technique . 4)Mousterian Quina type : with also many side scrapers, but tools made on thicker flakes because of the absence of the levallois technique ; flaking is scaly. 5) Denticulate Mousterian : with notches and denticulates, other tools are rare. On the other hand, for Binford, each of the various tools assemblies correspond to a particular function of economic order, each site would have its specialized function. He distinguishes several factors : Factor 1 : tools of the Upper Paleolithic type : burins, scrapers, backed knives, borers and nozzles. Do not proceed of an activity linked to hunting, but of an activity linked to the manufacture of other tools. One would find them in the base camps. Factor 2 : mousterian and Levallois points retouched or not, scrapers: activity of hunting which indicates a temporary halt of hunters. Factor 3: backed knives, Levallois flakes unretouched. These unretouched tools could be used for a small work of cutting of food. Factor 4 : notches, denticulates, abrupt flakes and " raclettes" ( kind of scraper with abrupt final retouch). Binford suggests an activity linked with the use of wood and bone. Factor 5 : very varied tools: discs, scrapers with final inverse retouch , unretouched Levallois blades, lengthened mousterian points, burins. It could be the panoply of a specialized hunter. In conclusion, it is difficult to say who is right about the reality, maybe we will never know it. But it seems that the two solutions could be mixed together.
