Description
Very Nice Serrated Blade, Mousterian DescriptionType: serrated Levallois bladePaleolithic Period, Industry: Middle Paleolithic: Mousterian Dating: from approx. 130.000 B.C. / stage 6 of the oxygen-isotope chronology up to approx. 40.000 B.C.Description: Size: length 4,6 cm Shape, Retouch: a fine regular Levallois blade: it’s right edge presents a carefully made serrated retouch, the left edge has a fine, continuous retouch. A reduction (blunting) is made at this edge, proximal part, on the interior side. Please see and compare with the other serrated tools also listed Raw-material: flint, entirely creamy white patinated Preservation: very well, no modern damages. Some matrix from the original site layer still adheres to the reduction face. It can be removed with acid, but we think it is a fine additional proof of authenticity of the artifact. Additional Information, Literature: denticulates are, along with notches and scrapers, the most commonly occuring types in European Mousterian. They are classifiable into many different types and represent one of the most important aspects of variability among Mousterian assemblages. A continuum of variability has been suggested by Debenath, Dibble (Handbook of Paleolithic Typology, Vol. I, p. 107), with notches at one end, grading into denticulated and serrated pieces, and the scraper at the other end. But a continuously denticulated edge can also grade into a scraper retouch. So it seems that these classes of tools are not only highly variable in morphology but also fairly complex in terms of technology and function as well.
