Description
A fine c 1890 J.Lebegue & Cie terrestrial Globe, a piece of history of an Era long gone! It displays the birth of new nations, as well as empires long before the dismay of their existence. Note the detailed, beautifully colored map and ornate mounting, truly a testament of superb craftsmanship! Empires such as the British, the Austria-Hungarian and the Ottoman are shown to have conquered the world. Metropolitan centers of the past such as Constantinople, Christiana and St. Petersburg are visible The US is visible as a young nation, with Indian Territories identified by tribe as well as the Indian Territory established by the Government in Eastern Oklahoma. Future States such as Alaska are shown as territories instead. This globe is truly a remarkable piece of history within itself. About the manufacture: Lebegue & Cie c1880 – 1910. Paris This manufacture was one of the leading globe-publishers of the late 1800’s. The company produced a wide range of models and published in several languages. Their line also included astronomical curiosities, such as ornate clock globes. Among the terrestrial globes published by Lebegue were those conceived by Dubail and by Bardot. A branch company functioned in Brussels, Belgium. The relationship between both parties is not known and only speculated to have been brothers. The cartouche reads as follows: GLOBE TERRESTRE / J.LEBEGUE & Cie, EDITEURS / 50 RUE DE LILLE 30 PARIS / JC BERNHARD /DES. ET. GRAV. Description: The globe consists of 12 individual hand laid paper gores and two polar calottes over a plaster sphere. The legend identifies mountain ranges, sea currents, Indian territories by tribe, imperial occupied colonies by color. The mounting is made of cast iron and finished in bronze. The details are superb and ornate, including lion’s paw, human faces and the LB medallion on the center of the base. Diameter of the globe is about 14 inches with a total height of about 23.5 inches. Quite a commanding and majestic piece! Condition: This globe is in fine condition for its age, as its rich in color and crisp in details with only a few blemishes in form of minor soiling and a hairline crack on the northern calotte. No loss of map. The mounting is solid, no cracks though does show age with some corrosion. The finial atop does not seem to be original. Please see pictures for details. The age of this model is base on the political borders which are displayed as follows: Europe: Austria-Hungarian Empire (1868-1918) is visible as well as the Ottoman Empire. Neither Poland or Finland has gained independence (1917). St Petersburg is visible (changed to Petrograd in 1914). Furthermore the Union of Sweden and Norway is displayed, which changed into two independent countries in 1905. Middle East/ Asia: Ottoman Empire is in control. No Middle Eastern countries such as Jordan, Iran or Saudi Arabia are in existence. The areas are simply identified as Arabia and Persia. Chinese and Indian Empire are identified. The island of Sakhalin is not yet shown to be divided between Russia and Japan (1905). Africa: Congo State is displayed (est.1884, changed to Belgian Congo in 1908). The first German Colonies have been established (1885). Abyssinia has not yet gained independence (1896). Americas: The location of Indian tribes are identified throughout the US.
